The California Institute of the Arts ( CalArts) is a private art university in Santa Clarita, California. It was incorporated in 1961 as the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the US created specifically for students of both the visual and performing arts.

The college moved to its current location 16 years later, a setting designed to coalesce with its environmental landscape. The name was eventually changed to the Art Institute of Southern California and, to further established its identity, the school was renamed the Laguna College of Art & Design in 2002.
