  4. ‘The Act of Union’ covers the period of history leading up to the Act of Union in 1801. Ireland was a rural society at that time. People were largely Catholic, but Protestants owned most of the land, and mistrust existed between all groups of Protestants and Catholics.

The Act originated from Britain's difficulties in governing Ireland especially after the Irish rising of 1798, and was designed to strengthen British security against France.
