Founded in 1836 as an alternative to the overcrowded churchyards of rapidly growing Philadelphia, Laurel Hill Cemetery was the first rural cemetery for the city and the second in the United States.
It is a treasure trove of Victorian-style funeral monuments and one of the first true arboretums and municipal parks in America. Laurel Hill contains graves of many distinguished Civil War-era personalities, including Gen. George G. Meade.
