The book does a great job of capturing the crushing feeling of despair of the Romans after this point, on both the higher and lower levels of society. John V, Manuel II, John VIII, and Constantine XI all try so damn hard to prolong the empires life but they're only delaying the inevitable and are fighting gravity.
