Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, the seat will be subject to boundary changes and will be renamed Belfast South and Mid Down, to be first contested at the 2024 United Kingdom general election.

It elected 6 deputies in 1921, and again at the 1922 general election. It covered the whole territory of County Donegal in north-west Ireland.
