16 de may. de 2024 · Built into the first church were fragments of two 9th-century cross shafts (fn. 21) and two others were found near the site in the 19th century. (fn. 22) All the cross shafts may have been on the site before the church was built, or they may have been brought there with the many Roman architectural fragments which were re-used in the first church.
The total population in the early 14th century was perhaps around 4,000. The total sum for which Gloucester was assessed in 1327 was £28 4 s . 8¼ d ., (fn. 67) compared with Bristol at £80 12 s. and Cirencester and Tewkesbury at £13 4 s . 2¼ d. and £10 3 s. 6 d. respectively. 15 de may. de 2024 · In 1339 the number of the monks was forty-six, (fn. 139) in 1351 it was only thirtysix, (fn. 140) but during the abbacy of John Boyfield (1377-81) there were fifty-four monks, (fn. 141) so the numbers suffered no permanent diminution. The register of Thoresby, bishop of Worcester, bears witness to serious internal discord in 1350.

A list of bailiffs, which can be amplified and corrected from original sources, was compiled by Furney (Glos. R.O., D 327, pp. 12–19) and was used by Rudder ( Glos . 113–15) and Fosbrooke ( Glouc . 206–8).

John Powell (d. 1713), town clerk of Gloucester, is commemorated in the lady chapel by a standing effigy by Thomas Green, depicting him in the robes of a judge of queen's bench.
