Dengan kedudukan yang strategik di atas bukit mengadap lencongan Sungai Sarawak, kubu ini berperanan sebagai tempat pertahanan utama Rajah Brooke yang menghadapi tentangan berterusan dari penduduk pribumi.

His unhappy second marriage was the cause of much gossip, and Margaret's sudden death in 1667 gave rise to a widespread suspicion, probably unfounded, that he had poisoned her.
