They had two daughters and two sons, George (1892–1938), 2nd marquess, and Louis, afterward Earl Mountbatten of Burma. A grandson (through his daughter Princess Alice) is Prince Philip, duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

On April 30, 1884, in Darmstadt, Louis married Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine, the daughter of his first cousin, Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and by Rhine, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom.
