Samuel Palmer ranks among the most important British landscape painters of the Romantic Period. For Palmer’s interpretation of the ‘pastoral’ is not remotely conventional; rather, it is visionary and idealistic. As he wrote in 1871: “I was always imagining and trying to draw”.
