He was the only son of King Georg V of Hanover and Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. He had two younger sisters: Princess Friederike (1848) – married Alfons, Baron von Pawel-Rammingen, had issue.

Princess Maria of Saxe-Altenburg (1818-1907) was the eldest daughter of Joseph, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Hildburghausen, and Duchess Amelia of Württemberg. In 1843 she married George, Crown Prince of Hanover, with whom she had three children; Prince Ernest Augustus, Princess Frederica, and Princess Marie.
