Né en Angleterre dans le comté d’Essex en 1929, David Nightingale Hicks obtient son diplôme à la Central School of Art and Design à Londres. He was married on January 13, 1960 at Romsey Abbey in Hampshire, to Lady Pamela Mountbatten (born 19 April 1929), the younger daughter of the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, and his wife, the former Edwina Ashley.

Edwina Victoria Louise Brudenell, née Hicks (born 24 December 1961 in Lambeth, London) is an aristocrat and artist. Edwina is the elder daughter of Lady Pamela Hicks and David Nightingale Hicks. Through her maternal grandfather, the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, she is a second cousin to Charles, Prince of Wales, and 480th in line to succeed to the British throne.
