He has long been represented in the Scottish arts for his close relationship with Mary Queen of Scots, his murder at the hands of her husband and other Protestant lords, and his association with the religious conflicts that marked the Scottish Reformation.

David Riccio di Pancaliere in Piedmonte was an Italian courtier, born near Turin, a descendant of the Riccio Counts de San Paolo et Solbrito. He entered the service of Mary, Queen of Scots, first as musician and later as her secretary and close companion. On the night of 9 March 1566 he was brutally murdered in Mary, Queen of Scots’ private apartments at Holyroodhouse.
