Philip Webb empezó a trabajar en el diseño de la casa durante un viaje en barco que hizo junto a William Morris y Charles Faulkner en 1858. Morris, Faulkner, Webb y Edward Burne-Jones, amigos desde la juventud, se propusieron dedicar su vida al arte después de visitar las catedrales del norte de Francia en 1855.

Although Burne-Jones's painted figures are in medieval costume much of the decoration is equally Oriental in inspiration. Philip Webb's straightforward design, however, which boldly displays the casework skeleton on the exterior, anticipated the emphasis on structural elements that would inform the design revolution of the next century.
