Lucian Freud stated that “my idea of portraiture came from dissatisfaction with portraits that resembled people. I would wish my portraits to be of people, not like them.” Such a confession denotes a certain amount of philosophical anguish as it presupposes that the artist, when painting somebody, is to an extent condemning them.
Paintings of people were central to the work of Lucian Freud (1922–2011) and this exhibition will be the first to focus on his portraiture. Concentrating on particular periods and groups of sitters to show Freud’s stylistic development and technical virtuosity, the exhibition will include both iconic and rarely-seen portraits of the artist’s lovers, friends and family.
Lucian Freud (1922 –2011) was a British painter who is widely celebrated for his portraits. A deeply private man, the people in Freud’s paintings were often those closest to him – his friends, family, fellow artists and lovers. Freud’s portraits are an intensely personal record of the time spent with those who he knew best.
