16 de feb. de 2018 · The marriage was cut short by Mary’s premature death in 1533 at the age of 37, and just three months later, Charles married again, this time to his adolescent ward, Katherine Willoughby. Katherine could very well have faded into oblivion – after all, Charles’s two wives prior to Mary certainly have.
He married his ward, Catherine Willoughby, who had previously been betrothed to his son, Henry. Catherine was only fourteen years of age at the time, and Suffolk was significantly older, being forty-nine. Not long after his marriage, Suffolk's son Henry died, but in September 1535, Catherine gave birth to a son and the couple named him Henry.
The second Lady Willoughby was at the heart of the English court – born Maria de Salinas, she had accompanied Katharine of Aragon from Spain to England in 1501, and had remained the queen’s closest friend. Henry VIII obviously liked her, too, as he named one of his ships for her – the Mary Willoughby.
