And he's been playing this type of music since at least the mid 70s, when I first encountered him on albums such as Places and Visible World. Charlie Haden brings his jazz influence to these tracks, with his bass filling in the sound laid down by Garbarek.

Jan Garbarek (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈjɑːn ɡɑɾˈbɑ̀ːɾək]) (born 4 March 1947) is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist, who is also active in classical music and world music. Garbarek was born in Mysen , Østfold , southeastern Norway , the only child of a former Polish prisoner of war, Czesław Garbarek, and a Norwegian farmer's daughter.
In addition to jazz, Garbarek fits his playing into a diverse array of forms, including Norwegian and South American folk songs, improvisations based on medieval polyphony, and music from the Indian subcontinent and Middle East. Witchi-Tai-To, released in 1974, has earned the distinction of being one of the finest dates in ECM's catalog.
