Lovingly nicknamed the “Mule” by her family because of her stubborn nature, she fought for a career of her own on the stage and marriage in 1936 to Austrian-born Jewish comedian and actor Vic Oliver. Though this marriage was not to last, her stage career blossomed.

  6. Oliver was also the first "castaway" on Desert Island Discs, the long running BBC Radio 4 program. He was married to Winston Chruchill's daughter Sarah, until their divorce in 1945. Following his cremation at Golders Green, Vic Oliver's ashes were scattered in Section 4-H of the Lawns of Remembrance.
