Elżbieta "Izabela" Dorota Czartoryska was a Polish princess, writer, art collector, and prominent figure in the Polish Enlightenment. She was the wife of Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski and a member of the influential Familia political party. She is also known for having founded Poland's first museum, the Czartoryski Museum, now located in Kraków.

Not only was her private life renowned for being abundantly sensational, but Czartoryska’s collection – initially exhibited at Poland’s first museum, the Temple of the Sybil and Gothic House in Puławy – was assembled with similar, at times scandalous, bravado.

Her daughter, Marianne, wife of Prince Ludwig of Wittemberg, was also a talented writer whose works received wide recognition. Princess Czartoryska lived during the time of Poland’s greatest tragedy, the Partition, and was one of the women who maintained the culture that enabled Poland to keep an unbroken spirit in the face of adversity.

Founded in 1796 by Princess Izabela Czartoryska, Czartoryska Museum (Muzeum Książąt Czartoryskich w Krakowie) was created to conserve the heritage of Poland and to maintain the city’s history alive.
