Saskia Uylenburgh groeide op als jongste in een gezin van acht kinderen (drie zoons en vijf dochters) in een statig herenhuis aan de Ossekop (nr. 11) te Leeuwarden. She might have been expected to marry young to a wealthy and well-born suitor, but instead, she traveled to Amsterdam in 1631, in the company of two artists, to visit her cousin.
