In 1670 Barbara was created Countess of Southampton and Duchess of Cleveland. She secured the right of succession to the remainder titles for her first and third sons, Charles and George, but the king at this time did not admit paternity of her second son, Henry. Barbara Palmer, Duchess of Cleveland with her eldest son, Charles FitzRoy.

Barbara FitzRoy. Lady Barbara FitzRoy (* 16. Juli 1672 in Cleveland House, London; † 6. Mai 1737 in Priory of St. Nicholas, Pontoise) war das sechste und jüngste Kind von Barbara Palmer, 1. Duchess of Cleveland, einer Mätresse des englischen Königs Karl II.
Lady Barbara Fitzroy was the sixth and youngest child of Barbara Palmer, 1st Duchess of Cleveland, and King Charles II of England, although her paternity has been disputed. She became a Benedictine nun in the English Priory of Saint Nicholas, at Pontoise in France, taking the name Sister Benedicta, where she later became prioress in 1721.
Barbara Fitzroy is portrayed as a smiling, round-faced five-year-old with blonde curls. The king died in 1685. In March 1691, eighteen-year-old Barbara gave birth to an illegitimate son of the Earl of Arran, whom she named Charles Hamilton (1691-1754).
