20 de oct. de 2020 · In the late 1950s, when Jerry McMillan (Chouinard 60) was driving with Ed Ruscha (Chouinard 60) from Oklahoma to the Chouinard Art Institute, McMillan distinctly remembers the moment that they were getting close to Los Angeles. The scent hit him. “I had never smelled anything like it before,” McMillan recounted.

California Institute of the Arts was established in 1961 with the merger of Chouinard Art Institute (founded 1921) and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music (founded 1883). This merger became the nucleus of Walt Disney’s dream of a community of the arts, the only professional training ground in the United States for all the visual and performing arts.
In tandem with the Chouinard Foundation, Marta hosts seven original artists’ benches from the Chouinard Art Institute (1921–1972). In 1973, a group of women obtained the former Chouinard Art Institute property and turned it into the Woman's Center, a meeting place and clearinghouse for feminist ideas in design. A group called the Feminist Studio Workshop, a feminist think tank and design studio, operated at the Woman's Center.
