Gorizia, together with its neighbour city Nova Gorica in Slovenia, have been chosen to become the European Capital of Culture for the year 2025. Meinhard von Gorizia VI Count of Gorizia was born in 1317, in Görz und Gradisca, Austria as the son of Albert II of Gorizia and Euphemia of Mätsch. He married Catherine von Pfannberg on 26 November 1347. They were the parents of at least 4 daughters. He died on 6 May 1385, in his hometown, at the age of 68.
At Leonhard's death, the last count of Gorizia, in the spring of 1500, the County with Gorizia Castle became properties of Maximilian I of Habsburg, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
