His growth from a hard-charging big band drummer into the creative, fiery hard bop bandleader and mentor took place, in public, from roughly December 1944 (when, with Billy Eckstine, Blakey made his first recordings) to November 1959, when Wayne Shorter joined the Jazz Messengers.
