Bertram Oliphant West wants to clear his unjustly smeared reputation. He joins the Foreign Legion, with Simpson his manservant. Despite Silvers receiving top billing, Follow That Camel failed to have any real impact on the box office receipts, either in the UK or in the US. Like the Carry On that immediately preceded it, Don't Lose Your Head (1966), this film was notably less successful than the previous Carry On s, owing to the bizarre decision taken by the distributors, Rank, to drop the Carry On prefix in the title.
Also known as ‘Follow that Camel’ (original title) and ‘Carry On in the Legion’ (US title) Frank Uwe Burk advises that the Sahara scenes were shot at Camber Sands near Rye, East Sussex. Andrew Doe confirms this.
Follow That Camel. Comedy about a young English aristocrat who, unjustly disgraced by accusations of cheating, joins the Foreign Legion and comes across a Bilko-like sergeant with a fort full of nervous legionnaires. With trouble brewing, the new recruit is forced to show his mettle and, hopefully, win back the heart of his lover.
