  1. John Hervey, 1st earl of Bristol (1665–1751), born on the 27th of August 1665, was educated at Clare Hall, Cambridge, and became member of parliament for Bury St Edmunds in March 1694. In March 1703 he was created Baron Hervey of Ickworth, and in October 1714 was made earl of Bristol as a reward for his zeal in promoting the principles of the revolution and supporting the Hanoverian succession.

  4. When the 1st Earl of Bristol's eldest son died without an heir, his second son, also John, took the courtesy title of Lord Hervey. John, Lord Hervey was a highly influential figure at the court of George II, a politician, pamphleteer and poet, whose outspoken Memoirs of the Reign of George II were kept unpublished by his family to avoid scandal for many years after his death.

  5. The eldest surviving son of John Hervey, 1st earl of Bristol, (1665–1751), he was educated at Westminster School and the University of Cambridge. He then made the customary “grand tour” of Europe and, at Hannover, Ger., became a firm friend of Frederick Louis (later prince of Wales), the eldest son of King George II.
