Gilbert Moses was an American director of television, stage and screen. He made his Broadway debut in Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death in 1971, which won the Tony Award for Best Director. He was the co-founder of the Free Southern Theater, under which he directed several television series.

When he co-founded the Free Southern Theater company, director Gilbert Moses became an important pioneer of American black theater. Over the course of a career that encompassed work on stage, screen and television, Moses won numerous awards, including the Obie, for directing Imamu Amiri Baraka's Slave Ship (1969), and a 1975 New York Drama Critics Circle for Taking of Miss Janie.
