With adjustments The Dumb Girl of Portici (1916) could have been one of the peak films of 1916, but as it stands it's a ambitious and lukewarm, only truly shining in a few scenes. Mostly remembered for being one of the key films of legendary ballet dancer Anna Pavlova , who showcases her light feet and elegance.

As Stamp put it in an e-mail: “Weber made her name with a series of features on topical and highly contentious social issues, including poverty, addiction, religious bigotry, sexual assault, the campaign to abolish the death penalty, and the fight to legalize contraception.”
