Telford’s achievements in early 19th Century engineering earned him the accolades from Robert Southey, the Poet Laureate at the time, of ‘Colossus of Roads’ and ‘Pontifex Maximus’. Thomas Telford gründete 1818 in London den Berufsverband Institution of Civil Engineers, dem heute rund 80.000 Bauingenieure in 140 Ländern angehören. Telford starb am 2. September 1834 in der Abingdon Street in Westminster (London). Er wurde in der Westminster Abbey bestattet.
Thomas Telford, född 9 augusti 1757 i Westerkirk i Eskdale, Dumfriesshire (i nuvarande Dumfries and Galloway), död 2 september 1834 i London, var en brittisk arkitekt och ingenjör.
