Como muchos miembros de la familia real, Mountbatten fue un aficionado al polo, y en 1931 patentó una maza de polo en Estados Unidos. Mountbatten introdujo el deporte en la Royal Navy en la década de 1920 y escribió un libro sobre la materia. También fue comodoro en el Club de Vela de Emsworth ( Hampshire) desde 1931.
