Herwarth von Bittenfeld nacque a Großwerther in Turingia, in una famiglia aristocratica che aveva dato molti ufficiali superiori all'esercito prussiano. Herwarth landed in American captivity on 09-05-1945 and released in July 1945 he retired in Munich, where he at the age of 66 died, on 15-01-1957. Herwarth von Bittenfeld is buried with his wife Ulricke, born Kyaw, who died age old age 95, on 13-12-1995, on the Ostfriedhof of Munich, close by the graves of Hitler’s WWI sergeant Max Amann.
