Jane Maxwell was born in Edinburgh in about 1748 (1), the daughter of Sir William Maxwell, 3rd Baronet of Monreith (2), and his wife Magdalene. As a girl, she lived in Hyndford’s Close, Edinburgh, with her mother and sisters.

She was born in Hyndford's Close, Edinburgh, where her mother occupied a large second-floor flat.

She was a supporter of Pitt and a close friend of Henry Dundas, Lord Melville, such that some bellieved they were lovers.
