The 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu was one of the ninety elected hereditary peers that remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999, and sat on the Conservative benches. As descendants of the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, the Barons Montagu of Beaulieu are also in remainder to this peerage and its subsidiary titles.
In 1721 John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690-1749), accepted the position of Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England. He was the first nobleman to do so. Montagu was seen as – and was – an inspired choice and it was a testament to his prestige and reputation that a significant number of other aristocrats followed his example.

However, the House that stands today is largely the work of Ralph Montagu, later 1st Duke of Montagu, who inherited a simple Tudor building in 1683. An English ambassador to France and patron of artists, craftsmen and decorators, the 1st Duke of Montagu wished to bring French beauty and style to the English landscape.
