The Island Def Jam Music Group is one of eight corporate divisions that presently comprise the Universal Music Group. The group was established as a division of UMG in 1999 following the acquisition of the remaining interest in Def Jam Records and merging it with the Island Records Division which was acquired a decade earlier by the Polygram Group in 1989.
