The Russian Orthodox church combated these remarks by explaining that the canonization of the Romanovs would not be considered an appropriation of the former regime or an argument for it’s reestablishment, but rather a nod to the Romanov family’s continual support and following of the Orthodox church and their “passion-bearing” behaviors.
