When Alan Penthièvre of Brittany 1st Earl of Richmond was born in 1100, in Denain, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, his father, Etienne de Penthièvre Count of Treguier, 3rd Lord of Richmond, was 35 and his mother, Hawise Guincamp Countess of Guingamp, was 36. He married Bertha Duchess of Brittany in 1139, in Poitou, France.

The great honour subsequently known as the honour of Richmond may be said to date from the time when William the Conqueror gave an extensive district in Yorkshire—some if not all of which had belonged to Edwin Earl of Mercia—to his kinsman and supporter Alan Rufus of Britanny in return for his services at the Conquest.
After Alan’s death in 1093, Richmond Castle and its estates passed in turn to two of his younger brothers, Alan Niger, ‘The Black’, and Stephen. By 1136 it was held by Stephen’s son, also Alan (II) Niger (c.1100–1146), who was the first to style himself Earl of Richmond.
