Charles Alexander Carnegie was born on September 23, 1893 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was Charles Noel Carnegie, 10th Earl of Southesk, the James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk and Lady Catherine Hamilton Noel. His mother was Ethel Mary Elizabeth Bannerman. At his birth he was styled Lord Carnegie as the son of an Earl.
Charles “Teenie” Harris (1908–1998) photographed Pittsburgh’s African American community from the 1930s to the 1970s. His archive of nearly 80,000 images—housed at Carnegie Museum of Art since 2001—is one of the most detailed and intimate records of the black urban experience known today.
