Born 24 November 1427, the fourth son to Humphrey Stafford, 1 st Duke of Buckingham. In 1461 he was made a Knight of the Bath by Edward IV. He fought on the Yorkist side at their victory at the Battle of Hexham on 15 May 1464. In 1469 he was made Steward of the Duchy of Cornwall for life and later that year he was created 1st Earl of Wiltshire.

Stafford was a close friend of the King, and Henry VIII was involved around this time with Anne Stafford, Countess of Huntingdon, Stafford's sister. Henry became a favourite of the King . He went with Henry VIII to France in 1513, captaining 651 men, was part of the entourage when Thomas Wolsey was made Cardinal on 18 Nov 1515 and was present at the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520.
