2 de jun. de 2008 · She married Alfred in 868. When Alfred died in 899, Ealhswith became a nun and died at St. Mary's Abbey, Winchester, Hampshire, England. Ealhswith, or Ealswitha, (born c. 852 in Mercia) of the Gaini was the daughter of Æthelred Mucil, Ealdorman of the Gaini. She was married in 868, to Alfred the Great, king of Wessex.
Her father was a Mercian nobleman, Æthelred Mucel, Ealdorman of the Gaini, which is thought to be an old Mercian tribal group. Her mother was Eadburh, a member of the Mercian royal family, and according to the historian Richard Abels she was a descendant of King Cenwulf of Mercia.
