En 1665, el inglés Robert Hooke, por medio de un microscopio primitivo, descubrió las células por primera vez y acuñó el término de “célula" para denominar a los esqueletos que las células dejan al morir y que hoy conocemos como pared celular. Hooke describió que los robles y otras plantas contenían células llenas de jugos.
