Like Halley's comet, Encke's name came from the person who calculated its orbit, Johann Encke, and not by its discoverer. The first recorded discoverer of Encke's comet was actually Pierre Méchain in 1786 but it was not identified as a periodic comet until Encke computed its orbit in 1819.

Johann Franz Encke1791-1865 German astronomer known for his mathematical work in astronomy, especially on short periodic comets. Following the discovery of a comet with a very short orbiting period around the Sun (3.3 years), Encke developed (in 1819) the mathematical formulae needed to calculate the orbits of this and other short periodic comets.

Johann Franz Encke (September 23, 1791 – August 26, 1865) was a German astronomer, was born at Hamburg. Encke studied mathematics and astronomy from 1811 at the University of Göttingen under Carl Friedrich Gauss; but he enlisted in the Hanseatic Legion for the campaign of 1813–1814, and became lieutenant of artillery in the Prussian service in 1815.
