Gerard ter Borch (1583 in Zwolle – 1662 in Zwolle), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. According to Arnold Houbraken, who referred to him as Gerard Terburg 's father, he was a good painter who had spent many years in Rome and who was the first teacher of his better known son.

Gerhard ter Borch (1617–1681) is considered one of the most important genre painters of Dutch Golden Age painting. There are two surviving, virtually identical versions of his iconic masterpiece, Gallant Conversation.
Individual portraits of the Van Moerkerken family include a 1645 painting of Hartogh (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam) by Crispijn van den Queborn (1604–1652), and paintings of Hartogh, Sibilla, and their children Maria, Cornelis, and twins Justinus and Harmen, by Gerard ter Borch's half brother Harmen (1638–1677).
This painting, one of the key works of Ter Borch's maturity, probably dates from about 1660–62. Though it was painted when the artist lived in Deventer, the luxurious interior and elegantly attired figures evoke the cosmopolitan milieu of Amsterdam
