Louis-Simon Boizot. Élève de Michel-Ange Slodtz et condisciple de Jean-Antoine Houdon, Louis-Simon nait en 1743 dans une famille bercée par les arts. En effet, son père, Antoine Boizot, est peintre pour la manufacture des Gobelins. Louis-Simon se distingue rapidement puisqu’il remporte le premier prix de l’École de Rome en 1762.
Boizot designed this porcelain group and corresponding pair of prints in 1794, the year France abolished slavery following the insurrection of enslaved persons in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti). They depict a free Black woman and man respectively adorned with a level and Phrygian cap, symbols of equality and liberty associated with the French Revolution.

Louis Simon Boizot. 1743 - 1809. Sculpteur Français. Antoine, père de Louis Simon Boizot est peintre du roi. Il choisit Jean-Baptiste Pigalle (1714-1785), son ami, comme professeur pour son fils. En 1762, Louis Boizot, élève du sculpteur Michel-Ange Slodtz, obtient le Premier prix de Rome sur le thème de "La mort de Germanicus".
