Abstract. This chapter examines the death of General Charles George Gordon as an example of heroic failure. In October 1884, a relief expedition was sent to Khartoum in the Sudan to help Gordon and a garrison of Egyptian troops who were being besieged by the forces of the Mahdi, the leader of an Islamic revolt against the authority of Britain's ally the khedive of Egypt.
