First came Georgiana, daughter of Earl Spencer and wife of the fifth Duke of Devonshire, who set tongues wagging on the gossip pages as a noted beauty, as one third of an eyebrow-raising ménage a trois with Lady Elizabeth Foster (who became Duchess after her) and as an ardent supporter of the Whig party.
