  6. Walter de la Mare was a poet and short story writer. He was born in Kent in April, 1873. He was only able to concentrate on writing full-time when Sir Henry Newbolt intervened. He arranged for de la Mare to receive a Civil List pension. De la Mare made good on that promise with the publication in 1912 of The Listeners, which was swiftly acclaimed by critics and the reading public.
