In 1779, he assumed oversight of secret intelligence for the British army and opened contact with American traitor Maj. Gen. Benedict Arnold. Andre was later captured, convicted, and hanged as a spy.

  2. John André was born in Lorraine on May 2, 1750 or 1751. His father was the director of the Ducal Treasury and his mother, who died when he was young, was from an aristocratic family. Andre graduated from the École Militaire in Paris and became a cadet in the French army.

Designed by Robert Adam and carried out by Peter Mathias Van Gelder it was erected in 1782 at the expense of King George III.
