Franz Clemens Honoratus Hermann Brentano era alemão e lecionou em Würzburg e na Universidade de Viena. Em 1864, foi ordenado padre, mas questionou a doutrina da infalibilidade papal, abandonando a Igreja em 1873. Sua Filosofia era nitidamente empírica em seu método.
