From the second world war until the break of the former Yugoslavia in 1992, the official language of Montenegro was actually Serbo-Croatian. Serbian and Croatian were the same language with regional variants.
The Montenegrin language is distinguished in the South Slavic family by its 32-letter alphabet, which includes the unique “Ś” and “Ź”. These letters correspond to sounds particular to Montenegrin, and the language’s pronunciation generally follows a phonemic orthography, where words are spoken as they are written.
