English: The Grand Duchy of Hesse (1806–1816), Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine (1816–1918) — a former state that existed in Hesse, Germany. It was formed in 1806 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire as a result of the actions of Napoleon, who then elevated the former Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt to the level of grand duchy.
The Grand Duchy joined the German Empire in 1871. As a small state within the Empire, the Grand Duchy had limits placed on its autonomy, but significant religious, social, and cultural reforms were carried out. During the November Revolution after World War I in 1918, the Grand Duchy was overthrown and replaced by the People's State of Hesse.

Two branches died out in the seventeenth century; the nineteenth-century descendants of the dynasty ruled until 1866 in the Electorate of Hesse- Kassel, and in the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt until 1918.
