Exhibiting with the Impressionists, as they were formally named at the time of their independent exhibition in Paris in 1874, Sisley enjoyed short-lived but considerable success during the 1870’s. While residing in Sèvres with his wife and children, Sisley painted this view of a curved pathway lined with chestnut trees in full bloom.
Alfred Arthur Sisley (* 30. Oktober 1839 in Paris; † 29. Januar 1899 in Moret-sur-Loing) war ein Maler des Impressionismus. Sisley kam in Frankreich als Sohn englischer Kaufleute zur Welt. Sein Vater machte ein Vermögen im Handel mit Südamerika.

Sisley nasceu em Paris, filho de pais ingleses, tendo estudado comércio em Londres, (1857-1861) para continuar o trabalho de seu pai, diretor de uma empresa de exportação de flores artificiais para a América do Sul.

Among his important works are a series of paintings of the River Thames, mostly around Hampton Court, executed in 1874, and landscapes depicting places in or near Moret-sur-Loing. The notable paintings of the Seine and its bridges in the former suburbs of Paris are like many of his landscapes, characterised by tranquillity, in pale shades of green, pink, purple, dusty blue and cream.
